Russ Johnson: Speaking of Bad Trades. . . .

1994 Stadium Club Draft Picks # 15
1994 SEC Player of the Year at LSU (over teammate Todd Walker) was # 1 supplemental pick in the June draft, then wouldn't sign in time to play that year. Debuted at Jackson in '95, then dominated the Texas League when he went back for '96. Johnson led the league in hits, was fifth in average, was named the Texas League Star of Stars at the AA All-Star game, and hit for the cycle.
1995 Signature Rookies # 31
In 1997, in the midst of a so-so year at AAA New Orleans, he got three brief midseason call ups to Houston, during which he hit safely in his first seven games, and homered off Pedro Martinez, and hit .300 overall.
1997 Bowman Best # 152
His year at New Orleans in '98 was better: he led the PCL in runs and walks, but the callup this time was September, and resulted in only a .231 BA with no homers. After 26 games and 45 at bats in 2000, Johnson--whose stock had really fallen--was traded by the pitching-desperate Astros to Tampa Bay for career 5.00-ERA guy Marc Valdes.
1998 Stadium Club In The Wings # W6
Valdes flunked out of Houston after 53 appearances, but Johnson found a job in Tampa--at least through May of 2001, when he injured his quadriceps and could not regain his job. He has split 2002 between Tampa and AAA Durham.
1998 Fleer Metal Universe # 42
