Meet The Bulls

JIM MONIN -- The 21-year-old third baseman for the Bulls is realizing his lifetime ambition.
. . .The 5' 11" 175-pounder has always wanted to play professional baseball. . . .Jim was born in Niagara Falls, NY, and now makes his home in Buffalo. . . . He attended Amherst Central in Buffalo and played baseball there for three years . . . . And for three years he
was the scholastic all-star shortstop for the city of Buffalo. . . . Jim began playing in Little League and continued through Babe Ruth league, Triple AABA, a fast amateur league, and also played some semipro ball. . . . His dad had been a semipro performer and also managed his sons' Little League and Babe Ruth League teams. . . . His club went to the Triple AABA tournament in Johnston, Pa., four times and Jim was selected the MVP of the
tourney in '63 with a fantastic .586 average. . . . He then entered the University of Kentucky and after his freshman year was awarded an athletic scholarship. . . . . In his sophomore and junior year he was the All-Conference shortstop. . . . Jim hit .302 as a soph and .310 as a junior. He was drafted No. 3 in the nation by the Astros after his junior year and was signed to a "substantial" bonus pact by Houston scouts Paul Florence and Al Vincent. . . . Played for a very short timewitht he Cocoa Club of the Florida State League and Amarillo of the Texas League last year. . . . Has been with Durham the entire season save for a two-week assignmentto Salisbury. . . . For relaxation, Jim plays golf (in the low '80's) and bowls (average 195). . . . In the offseason he is a student at the University of Kentucky, majoring in business administration. . . .Very much single and very much an admirer of the state of North Carolina .

Monin would also go on, as a member of the 1968 Dallas-Fort Worth Spurs, to start at second in both of the back-to-back no-hitters Bob Watkins and Luis Penalver threw in May of '68, then five weeks later start at third for Paul Doyle's gem.
