John Cangelosi Cards
|

Cangelosi is the Astros' all-time leader (minmum 500 plate appearances) in a stat I made up called "special bases," which is:(Walks + Hit By Pitch + Stolen Bases) minus (2 x Caught Stealing) all divided by (Plate Appearances - Hits).
I was trying to come up with a stat that would quantify a player's ability to get a base for you, regardless of his ability to hit. Only 4 players (again 500 PA minimum) have had a career special bases score over .200 with the Astros: Cangelosi at .255, Jeff Bagwell, Joe Morgan, and career walk-rate leader Joe Ferguson. |

Number two pick in the June '68 Draft made his major league debut April 20 of '71, and played in 67 games. But '72 found him out of favor; by November, he had been traded with some other guy named to the Mets for Tommie Agee. At least we've got his 72 Topps # 56. The Astros' Media guide incorrectly states that he played with the 'Stros through'76. |

3rd Base/Catcher
|
| 8th Round Pick in 2005 deflated talk of nepotism by slugging .477 with a .398 OBP in his first season at Greeneville. First professional homer was a grand slam. A hand injury in 2006 while playing for Lexington kept Koby from getting up a full head of steam--or did he just reach his ceiling? Repeated at Lexington in '07, and raised his OPS to .756 while leading the team in homers with 15--but he also struck out 122 times. Made the conversion to catcher that many had predicted for Salem in 2008, and hit about .270 with a .420 SLG. The arrest for disorderly conduct that came after--even though charges were dismissed--sure didn't help the by-then beleaguered family name. In 2009, though, came a truly surprising and truly awesome year: playing for the High A Lancaster JetHawks, Clemens led the California League in average, slugging, RBI and OPS, while finishing third in OBP. Clemens' 121 RBI led all of minor league baseball, and he was named Lancaster's MVP for the year. | |

Roger Clemens Cards

|
UT graduate was already headed for the Hall of Fame when he decided to pitch a season for his quasi-hometown 'Stros. Won his first seven starts as an Astro, and was elected to start the 2004 All-Star Game held at Minute Maid Park. But Clemens got shelled during the All-Star game, and lost Game 7 of the 2004 NLCS, so he decided to come back and try again in 2005--when he improved his ERA to the point where he led the league, and won a playoff game in relief. But Roger was not happy with the playoffless Astros in 2006, and he returned to the Yankees for 2007, for whom he was somewhat underwhelming.

| Middling infielder copped an attitude in '69 when he failed to report after trade from Expos; Clendenon was returned, and the teams scrambled to make a bad trade for the Astros even worse. Never played an inning in Houston, yet somehow, the people at Topps came up with the 1969 Topps # 208, and the people at Milton Bradley followed suit. Clendenon unfortunately had the last laugh when he was named 1969 World Series MVP for the Mets, a team he evidently found more to his liking. | |

Jorge Correa Cards
|
Pitcher |
| | Correa went 1 - 0 with a 20.65 in six games for the 1992 Auburn Astros. Think about that for a second. On the major league level, for example, only Dean Wilkins in the entire history of the Houston National League franchise, had a career ERA above even 10.00 and still managed to maintain a winning record. He was 2 - 1 with an 11.25 in 1991. Although now that I look further, I see that JR Richard did go 1 - 0 with a 13.50 for the '72 squad. . . . |

Mike Cosgrove Cards
|
| | Pitcher | | | |
|
Much like my personal fave, Curt Schilling, Cosgrove gave up a hit in a ninth inning after relieving a pitcher or pitchers who had thrown no-hit ball through eight. Cosgrove ruined the magic September 4, 1974, when Don Wilson, bidding for his third no-hitter, trailed the Reds 2 - 1 through the penultimate inning. Manager Preston Gomez brought in Cosgrove, Cosgrove gave up a single to Tony Perez, the Astros lost, and what could have been a game everyone remembers has now instead been totally forgotten.

| Very respectable finish in Colts' first year, then got no better; replaced by Lum Harris September 19, 1964--with 13 games left in the season. I am now also finding that Craft, much earlier in his career, caught a flyball for the last out in Vander Meer's second no-hitter. | |
